چکیده

In previous work[1] it was shown that a mechanism competing for a presynaptic factor enables the self-organizing formation of local receptive elds with orientation selectivity, even though the synapses between the input and output layers are all nonlocal, i.e., fully connected. The previous model, however, assumed a priori competitive systems, called hypercolumns, that may not appropriately represent the inherent structure of the input, which is a hierarchy of lowto high-level features. In this paper we propose to use a self-organizing competitive system, rather than an a priori determined system. Self-organization is implemented by including Foldi ak's anti-Hebbian learning rule in out system. Computer simulations show that this model allows for the formation of local receptive elds with orientation selectivity, and that selforganization successfully structures the competitive system.

Receptive Fields and Maps in the Visual Cortex: Models of Ocular Dominance and Orientation Columns

under the title \Models of Ocular Dominance and Orientation Columns." Reused by permission. ABSTRACT The formation of ocular dominance and orientation columns in the mammalian visual cortex is brieey reviewed. Correlation-based models for their development are then discussed, beginning with the models of Von der Malsburg. For the case of semi-linear models, model behavior is well understood: co...

Topographic Receptive Fields and Patterned Lateral Interaction in a Self-Organizing Model of the Primary Visual Cortex

This article presents a self-organizing neural network model for the simultaneous and cooperative development of topographic receptive fields and lateral interactions in cortical maps. Both afferent and lateral connections adapt by the same Hebbian mechanism in a purely local and unsupervised learning process. Afferent input weights of each neuron self-organize into hill-shaped profiles, recept...

Self-organization of spatiotemporal receptive fields and laterally connected direction and orientation maps

Studies of orientation maps in primary visual cortex (V1) suggest that lateral connections mediate competition and cooperation between orientation-selective units, but their role in motion perception has not been established. Using a self-organizing model of V1 with moving oriented patterns, we show that (1) afferent weights of each neuron organize into Gabor-like spatiotemporal receptive field...

Soft-to-hard Model Transition in Clustering: a Review

Clustering analysis often employs unsupervised learning techniques originally developed for vector quantization. In this framework, a frequent goal of clustering systems is to minimize the quantization error, which is aaected by many local minima. To avoid connnement of reference vectors to local minima of the quantization error and to avoid formation of dead units, hard c-means clustering algo...

On-center and Off-center Cell Competition Generates Oriented Receptive Fields from Non-oriented Stimuli in Kohonen's Self-organizingmap

Introduction The self-organization of sensotopic maps, in particular of visual maps, continues to be an area of great interest in computational neuroscience. In order to distinguish between the diierent map formation models and between the spe-ciic self-organization mechanisms they assume, their behavior with regard to an as large number of physiological, anatomical or theoretical constraints a...
